Maths at The Brow

We aim to develop confident, resilient and enthusiastic mathematicians who are able to apply their learning fluently and reason logically across a range of contexts. Our mathematics curriculum is carefully sequenced from Reception to Year 6 to ensure pupils build secure foundations, deepen conceptual understanding and develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills over time.

We use a mastery approach to mathematics, where all children are encouraged to achieve a deep understanding of key mathematical concepts. From Reception through to Year 6, we use the NCETM Mastering Number programme to strengthen number sense, fluency and confidence with number facts. This supports pupils in developing strong mathematical foundations from the earliest stages of learning.

Our core mathematics curriculum is supported through Power Maths, which provides a coherent and progressive structure for teaching mathematics across the school. Lessons are designed to encourage mathematical thinking, discussion and reasoning, enabling pupils to explain their understanding and make connections between concepts.

A key aspect of our mathematics pedagogy is the use of the Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (CPA) approach. Children first explore mathematical concepts using practical resources and manipulatives (concrete), before representing their understanding through images and models (pictorial), and finally moving towards abstract mathematical methods and symbols. This approach helps pupils develop secure conceptual understanding and confidence in applying mathematical strategies independently.

To further develop fluency and recall of key number facts, pupils regularly access:

  • Times Tables Rock Stars to develop rapid multiplication and division recall

  • NumBots to strengthen early number fluency and calculation skills

  • Maths-Whizz to provide personalised mathematical practice and consolidation

Through our mathematics curriculum, we strive to ensure all pupils become fluent, confident and curious mathematicians who are well prepared for the next stage of their education and everyday life.
